A break from work, a chance to get out of town and head to the bach (or Crib for you southerners) and catch up with family and friends for a week.
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY does every holiday occasion revolve around food ?
Everybody who turns up at the house brings food, every time a visitor comes round, on goes the kettle and out comes the baking.
If it's raining..lets bake, if the suns out..lets have a bbq. We all know that holidays are great for the soul and the mind but what about the stomach!
Do calories not count if your outside of your residential post code ? Do normal people talk about 'what shall we get out for dinner' while we are having breakfast ?
Why does every breakfast have to be 'bacon & eggs' and every evening meal have to be followed with some sort of ice cream/pie/chocolate.
It's a week of mayhem, the wine and beer comes out around 4pm every day "bar's open" comes the cry from the lounge, followed by cheese and crackers, chips and dips, and all sorts of lollies to keep the wolf like pack of kids happy, whilst us adults sip on our wines and beers, reflecting on a great day at the beach, where by all accounts we did stuff all.
I tried most days to pound the pavement, but alas not enough to break into a 'sweat intensive' state of exhaustion, and who wants to be up at 7am jogging on their holidays anyway. So I'm definitely looking forward to getting back to the gym after a week away, and getting the food diary back on track after my little 'break'.
If there is one thing I've learnt over the holiday, it's that staying on track is a lot harder without the routine. Sure the routine can get boring and mundane, but there is some method to the madness.
I've kept away from most carb like substances, well the ones that had carb written all over them like bread/chips/spuds/rice but I'm sure in excitement of being on holiday there may have been to odd slip up, same with my sugar intake. I'm learning to 'look harder' at what's going into my system, and spent the best part of one night convincing myself and a room full of others that because the ginger ale was 'diet' it was still ok to consume the best part of the bottle of whisky. It's amazing how much clarity I have in the early hours of the morning...I should start work earlier..and less sober.
Ah well, holiday is over, back to the gym and work on Monday, and back to the routine, I like the routine, I moan about the routine...but I need it.
